Zuul FX: Live free or die

Another album sent from the kind people at Osmose Productions. To be perfectly honest, this is nothing like I expected it to be considering it’s sent from said record label. Zuul FX mixes alot of shit into their music. One second they sound like a goth band (“French kisses”), just to become a completely different band as soon as the chorus enters the picture. Other times they sound like some Fear Factory meets Slipknot meets Meshuggah meets something else. Or the other way around, take yer pick.
I like the somewhat experimental approach, though at times it just gets kinda hard to grab completely, and as a whole it pretty much sounds the same, not that it’s necessarily a bad thing. Zuul FX got a bit of their “own” sound made out of 4 million other bands. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it’s just a blur and I need to check if it’s the same tune all along or if my CD player actually changed track. There’s no denying they definitely got some excellent riffs going on at times though, just listen to the opening of “Here is pure hatred”.
But it’s not only influences from the mentioned bands that you get hear. We can’t forget the obvious Machine Head, who apparently is another fave band of these guys. And I don’t mind it all that much. Though Machine Penis pretty much blows these days.
Can’t say that I see absolute great things happening to this band since the scene is already over-crowded with bands wanting to become any of the aforementioned bunch of fuckers, but who knows – I might be wrong. Though it’s not very likely. Zuul FX doesn’t necessarily take all the best parts from the scene, but they manage to at least incorporate most of the decent shit while creating a sound that is, as mentioned, somewhat their own in the end, despite the obvious worshiping of the namedropped bands in this review.
